Check whether your image is a photo or graphic

A PNG photograph can be too large for email or an upload form. JPEG often suits portraits and landscapes, where colors change gradually. PNG can be a better choice for small text, thin lines, and logos. Make a copy and compare the result before deciding, rather than replacing the only original you have.

Open the PNG and zoom into the JPEG result. Photos often become smaller, while small lettering and thin lines may look better in PNG. Adjust quality, check the actual size, then save.

    1. Decide whether the image is mainly a photo or text and graphics.
    2. Inspect the JPEG at 100% for marks around text and thin lines.
    3. Check that losing transparency is acceptable, then save a separate copy.
Should I convert a screenshot to JPG?

Compression can create halos around small text. JPG may work well for a photo-heavy screenshot, but compare document and interface captures at full size before deciding. A format change does not always make a file smaller.

    Will transparency become black?

This tool places a white background behind transparent areas when saving JPG. For another color, set the background in Cutout first. Keep PNG or WebP if you need transparency.

Which format should I use for a screenshot?

PNG often keeps tables, code, and small text easier to read. JPEG can leave faint marks around letters. Zoom in on numbers and other details that must be read accurately. If the service you send through compresses pictures again, sending the image as a file attachment may help preserve the copy you checked.

Why did a white background appear?

JPEG cannot store transparency. This page places transparent areas on a white background when making a JPEG. That may leave an awkward white edge around a logo used on a dark page. Keep the logo as PNG, or put it on the intended background before converting it.

Does maximum quality make it identical to the PNG?

A high JPEG quality setting does not promise identical pixels. JPEG is designed to keep photographs looking natural while using less space. Keep PNG originals for future editing or text-heavy material, and make JPEG copies for delivery when that format is useful.
