Save a broadly compatible image
If a downloaded image will not open in a document editor, a JPEG copy may help. WebP can contain ordinary photos, transparent graphics, or animation, so JPEG is not always the best replacement. Check what the file contains before saving it. For a photograph, compatibility may matter more than a smaller file; for a transparent logo, PNG may be the more useful choice.
Add the WebP file; JPEG is already selected. Check transparent areas and text edges in the comparison before saving. You can switch to PNG if the receiving website accepts it.
- Open the WebP and check for transparency or animation.
- Choose PNG if you need transparency, or JPEG for an ordinary photo.
- Inspect small text and edges, then open the saved copy in its destination app.
Why did the transparent background turn white?
JPG cannot store transparency, so those areas are composited onto white. Choose PNG for a logo that needs a transparent background. Renaming a .webp extension to .jpg does not convert the image.
What happens to an animated WebP?
Only a still first frame is handled here. A single JPG cannot preserve the animation. Check that the preview shows the frame you want before saving.
Can I just rename the file to .jpg?
A filename does not change the image data inside a file. Renaming the extension can confuse an editor or cause an upload to fail. Save a JPEG copy with this tool instead. When selecting it for an upload, check the file type and location so you do not accidentally pick the original WebP.
Can I paste a webpage address?
Save the image file to your device first, then select that file. A webpage address, especially one behind a login, is not the image itself. Use images you have permission to save, and check the source and reuse terms before publishing product photos or someone else’s artwork.
Why is the JPEG larger?
WebP may already store that particular picture efficiently. A larger JPEG can still be useful when the goal is compatibility. If the destination also has a file-size limit, continue to Compress and set a target there. Check text and edges before repeatedly lowering quality just to reach a smaller number.
