    Check the resulting file size

Use this page when a design workflow or document needs a PNG file. Converting a JPEG does not add resolution or bring back blurred detail. It can store the picture as it currently looks without another JPEG encoding step. Keep the original separately and treat the PNG as a working copy for the next part of your project.

Open the JPG with PNG preselected. With the default full-color setting, saving adds no lossy compression to the decoded image. Photographs can become much larger as PNG, so check the result size.

    1. Select the JPG and check that rotation and dimensions are as intended.
    2. Compare the PNG with color reduction turned off if you want to keep the colors.
    3. Check the output size, then save the working copy.
Will PNG restore quality lost in the JPG?

No. Existing blur and block artifacts remain. Converting to PNG stores the current image in another format; it does not recover missing detail.

Does a white background become transparent?

Changing the format leaves background pixels intact. To remove them, select the subject in Cutout and keep the subject only. Saving that result as PNG can preserve its transparency.

Is PNG useful between editing steps?

Repeated JPEG saves can accumulate compression damage. Keeping intermediate work as PNG avoids adding that particular kind of loss at each save. It does not reverse damage already present in the original JPEG. Different applications may also handle color differently, so check the image in the editor you plan to use.

How do I make the background transparent?

PNG supports transparency, but changing the format alone leaves the existing background in place. Select the subject in Cutout, keep the subject, then save as PNG. Try the result over both a light and a dark background to spot leftover colors around hair or object edges.

Can a PNG conversion change colors?

Color reduction groups similar colors to make a smaller file. If you enable it, smooth transitions in skies or skin may change. Leave that option off when preserving the current colors matters more than size. Also check the color settings of the application that will display the saved image.
